General Definition of Work/Typical Tasks

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Provides support and assistance with Corporate Communications general operations, administration, management and strategic planning, including the utility’s media and public relations components, event planning, community relations and online and social media strategy. Work is performed under general supervision and the position reports to the Vice President of Corporate Communications.

General Definition of Work/Typical Task (Continued)

TYPICAL TASKS:

Assist with the development and execution of communications strategies to include story pitches, news releases and various program award and application submissions.

Assist with writing, editing and proofreading of materials for internal and external audiences, to include presentations, online and printed materials.

Assist with developing corporate communication responses to internal and external inquiries.

Remains aware of utility programs, projects and activities and coordinates publicity for newsworthy activities. Serves as back-up media spokesperson for the utility.

Interprets and communicates KUA’s goals and objectives as needed. Identifies and assist with responses to customer and employee media communication needs. Designs and implements communications and other related programs and projects as directed.

Assist with planning and coordinating public outreach programs and campaigns, community support programs and special events.

Responds to requests for information from other utilities, government organizations, businesses, media, customers and the general public.

Act on behalf of the Corporate Communication Vice President as directed.

Maintains job related records.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of principles of public relations, including the research, planning, implementation and evaluation of public relations programs.

Highly skilled in Microsoft Office and internet research with design software, including Adobe InDesign, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Illustrator. Web development experience a plus.

Familiarity in working with new media and social networking platforms.

Ability to multi-task and work under pressure with strict adherence to deadlines.

Ability to independently review source materials on a wide range of topics and effectively communicate financial and technical information, both orally and in writing (using correct English and AP-style grammar), in a clear, concise and interesting manner suitable for the target audience.

Ability to use computers, video, photographic equipment, and work with audio, video and graphic production and design professionals.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse population segments and community organizations.

Ability to work effectively with elected officials, department directors, business affiliates, employees and the general public.

Must have strong interpersonal skills.

Must have exceptional and persuasive written and oral communication skills with demonstrated proficiency.

May be required to lift or displace up to 25 pounds.

Ability to be available for work at variant times beyond regularly scheduled working hours, which may include extended work hours on occasions to include nights and weekends.

Must be able to work independently and effectively lead small work groups.

Must have excellent organization skills with a high level of flexibility.

May be subject on occasions to working in different or extreme weather conditions.

Ability to respond to and provide support during company emergencies and disasters.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field from accredited school. A minimum of 2 years experience in public relations work with a demonstrated knowledge and experience in public relations principles and practices. Any combination of training, education or internship in lieu of experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida.
